Look at that face. Can we agree Jean should always maintain that beautiful mustache?
Anyway I’m hear to open up a safe space for sharing our feelings about the 2012 Oscar noms. Here are mine:
-The Artist deserves everything. Evvverrryyythinnggg.
-Melissa McCarthy is hysterical and amazing. I want to be her best friend andwill throw a chair at my TV if she doesn’t win. In a similar vein, members of the Academy will wake up with a fake horse head under their sheets if Kristen Wiig doesn’t walk out of that theater with a statue.
-Why are people hating on Tree of Life? I thought we all agreed it was pretty amazing at least re: Best Cinematography. The dinosaurs threw you guys off, didn’t they.
-Surprise, surprise: the Best Director category is all white men. Again.
-I am still bitter about the Academy’s new BS rule for documentaries, even though If a Tree Falls is a great pick (Where’s Bill Cunningham???). One of my favorite reactions to the new rule came from documentarian (and existential BAMF) Errol Morris, although he subsequently deleted the tweet: “@errolmorris: OK, why not give the documentary nominations over to the National Enquirer? (Or better yet, just draw them out of an old hat.)” The National Enquirer’s picks would probably be more interesting in general, let’s be honest.
-So, what are we supposed to look at if Ryan Gosling hasn’t been invited? Jean Dujardin’s unmustachioed face? Alright.
Update: I’ve been mulling over what rule for qualifying documentaries I would enact if it were in my power. I’d declare Werner Herzog Lord of the Documentary and give him ultimate authority over nominations and winners. He might just nominate his own films, he might nominate a sad penguin, you just have to DEAL.
